The Dead Sea—nine times saltier than the regular ocean—sits 420m below sea level. Is that cheating, given that it doesn’t look or feel like being beneath the sea? Possibly.

They’ll certainly have tried in the Dead Sea itself—the incredible buoyancy caused by its strong salinity means you can float in any position with no effort—but probably not succeeded. Given that visitors are told not to pee in the water due to it stinging, it makes sense that that would apply to other activities too. If you have a ridiculous amount of spare money and a desire to visit the murky darkness of the ocean, you are in luck—there are now incredibly luxurious passenger submarines capable of going incredibly far down into the sea. The Kidd Creek Mine in Ontario contains the deepest accessible non-marine point on earth, the bottom of Shaft No. 4. The temperature can reach 150 degrees Fahrenheit, so an elaborate cooling system is in place to keep the miners safe.

The Challenger Deep is the deepest known point of the seabed, a pitch-black, inhospitable environment at the bottom of the Mariana Trench. Going there requires descending in crafts with extra-thick titanium walls to withstand pressures that would crush a person in an instant.
